The Sacraments of the Church are the fruit of the redemptive sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. They touch all the important moments of the Christian life, and each is ordered to Holy Communion with Christ and His Church. In total, there are 7 Sacraments which can be divided into the Sacraments of Christian Initiation: BAPTISM, CONFIRMATION, and HOLY EUCHARIST; the Sacraments of Healing: PENANCE and ANOINTING OF THE SICK; & the Sacraments at the Service of Communion and Mission: HOLY ORDERS and MATRIMONY.
The reception of each Sacrament requires some form of preparation for each individual (and/or their parents) in order for him/her to more fully participate in the Mystery which the Sacrament bestows.

BAPTISM
Baptism is the Sacrament through which the faithful are born anew. One is immersed into the death of Christ and so rises with him as a 'new creature' (2 Cor 5:17).
For infants: A Baptism Session is required for parents prior to scheduling the reception of Baptism for their child. Expecting couples are asked to please call the Parish Office to register for a session, (319) 827-6682.
For children (older than 5-years old): Preparation sessions are required for children and are typically coordinated with Catholic School curriculum or our parish's YFF program. Please call the Parish Office to discuss with our director of Faith Formation, Lori Schutte.
For adults: Please see "RCIA" below.

FIRST RECONCILIATION & FIRST COMMUNION
Reconciliation (or Penance) is the Sacrament of conversion of the baptized, so that those, already having received the new life of grace in Baptism, may again turn away from sin and be restored to Communion in Christ.
The Holy Eucharist (also called, Communion) is the Blessed Sacrament, the perpetual memorial of Christ's death and Resurrection. It is the very sacrifice of the Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus, a bond of charity, a paschal banquet, a sign of unity.
For children: Preparation is required prior to celebrating one's first Reconciliation, as well as one's first Holy Communion, typically during the 2nd Grade. These preparations are usually coordinated as part of our Catholic School Curriculum or YFF Program.
If you have any question, please contact our Director of Faith Formation, Lori Schutte, for more information. (319) 827-6682 or via email at [email protected]

RCIA
The Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) celebrates the reception of all or some of the Sacraments of Initiation through one's deepened conversion to Christ, and so leads them into living in full Communion with the Catholic Church.
Preparations for Christian Initiation and Reception into Full Communion with the Catholic Church typically begin in the fall and lead up to the celebration of the Sacraments at the Easter Vigil in the spring. However, every journey of faith is unique:
For adults desiring to be baptized: Preparations will lead individuals through what's called the "catechumenate," a process of introduction to Christ and to His Church, as well as the beginnings of a life-long walk with Christ, through prayer, Scripture, and Sacrament.
For adult Christians desiring to become Catholic: Preparations will lead candidates towards a deeper appreciation of the baptismal grace that we share, as well as open them to the richness of the Traditions of the Catholic Faith.

HOLY ORDERS
The Sacrament of Holy Orders is the continuation of the mission entrusted by Christ to his Apostles through Ordination, so that His sacred power to teach, sanctify and govern will remain among the People of God through the work of the Holy Spirit.

Preparations for Ordination take place in seminary and through the Vocations Office of the Archdiocese of Dubuque, however, it begins first by seeking answers to questions and having a conversation with one who has heard the call before. To contact Fr. Ben, please call the Parish Office, (319) 827-6682.
